Travel to Varenna

Varenna is located on the Como lake, about 70 km north from Milano. It is well connected to Milano by trains, which start from the Stazione Centrale (Milano main station), and arrive in Varenna in about 1h.

By Airplane
The tree airports in the Milano area are: Milano Malpensa, Milano Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio. All these airports are well connected by bus with the main Milano train station (Milano Centrale), from which it is easy to arrive in Varenna by train.

From Milano Malpensa there are two bus companies connecting the airport to the city: Malpensa Shuttle, and Malpensa Express. Price (about 5 Euro) and travel length (about 50 min) are the same for the two companies. Both start close to the exits n. 4 – 5 at the arrival floor, and arrive at the Stazione Centrale. Don’t use the train: it is more expensive and doesn’t arrive to the main Milano train station.

From Milano Linate there is one bus company to Milano Centrale: Starfly (30 min, 4 Euro). It strats just in front to the airport every 30 min.

From Bergamo Orio al Serio there are two possibilities: 1) by bus to Milano Centrale (Orioshuttle); 2) by taxi or with a local bus to the Bergamo train station. From here by train to Lecco and then to Varenna. This last solution may be faster if you don’t have to wait too long for the train to Lecco. Check the train timetable!

By Train
The only fast way to arrive to Varenna by train is starting from Milano Centrale. There are about 10 direct trains per day connecting Milano Centrale to Varenna in about 1 h (see the timetable). After Varenna, these trains go on to Sondrio or Tirano which are the final destination reported on the station boards. Please note that IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO BUY THE THICKETS ON-BOARD.

By Car
By car usually you have to arrive in Lecco. From here follow the indications to Sondrio or to Valtellina (freeway n°36). After about 20 km take the exit to Bellano and go toward south for 5 km along the lake front. The firs village is Varenna.
Only if you are coming from north and you arrive in Lugano (CH) there is another possibility. In Lugano thake the road SS340 to Menaggio (Italy). From here, or from Cadenabbia (5 km south), ferries allow you to arrive in Varenna avoiding the crowded traffic in the lake area. Check the ferry timetable.
