Title: Experiences with the Founding of High Technology  Start-up Companies

Abstract

This talk reports about own experiences in starting technology companies as spin-off from research institutes. The companies „Dr. Eberl MBE Komponenten GmbH“ and „Lumics GmbH“ have been founded out of the scientific research work in the Technical University Munich, and, the Max-Planck-Institute for solid state research in Stuttgart, respectively. Dr. Eberl MBE Komponenten GmbH was founded in 1990 and offers complete systems as well as components for molecular beam epitaxy, with applications in semiconductor device fabrication, and basic research on nanostructures, solar cells, spintronics, organic materials etc. Lumics GmbH was founded with venture capital in the year 2000, and produces GaAs based high power laser diodes for telecommunication, medical applications and material processing. The full path from product idea to business plan with financing options, the founding and the company built-up will be described for both cases. The conclusion is, that the founding of your own company can be an exiting option to working in industry or to an academic career in the university or research institute.
