Livia Giordano’s research activity focuses on surface chemistry of nano-structured oxides, which find applications in heterogeneous and environmental catalysis.

Another aspect of her research concerns the study of structural and electronic properties of extended interfaces, metal/oxide and electrode/electrolyte, and interfacial phenomena applications in (electro) catalysis, batteries, sensors and fuel cells.

The methods used range from periodic band structure calculations in the framework of Density functional theory (DFT), DFT+U and hybrid functionals, to molecular calculations combined with embedded cluster models. These methods are used for predicting and interpreting phase diagrams of nanostructures, vibrational and photoemission spectra, scanning tunneling microscopy images, and chemical reactivity (reaction energy profiles, reaction rates).
