Titolo: Facts and Fictions of Polymorphism

Polymorphism of molecular crystals has aroused considerable interest and generated a great deal of research activity in the past quarter of a century. The realization that a particular compound can crystallize in a number of different solid forms has led to increasingly sophisticated attempts to prepare new solid forms. Different forms allow for the investigation of structure-property relations in the absence of any molecular chemical perturbation. Polymorphic systems also provide opportunities for tuning the properties of the solid form a particular chemical entity. The choice of a particular solid form for a pharmaceutically active material can be particularly important for efficacy, stability and the creation and protection of intellectual property.
The consideration and study of these various facets of multiple solid forms has generated a number of fictions and myths about the occurrence of multiple forms and the potential role that they can play in the solid state chemistry of any particular material. In this talk I will touch on a number of these issues in an attempt to distinguish between those myths and fictions and the facts on the ground.
