RENOVATE - A circular and chemistry-neutral approach for recycling and recovery of battery waste feeds

The increasingly rapidly growing electric vehicles (EV) market results in higher growth rates in all the LIBs volume categories, from cradle to grave. This trend makes ever more urgent the boosting of battery recycling for several reasons, the most important ones being:… Read more i) the preservation of the environment, and ii) the development of a circular economy reducing the demand for virgin materials and the Europe’s dependence from third countries. All these crucial aspects need to be handled through the development of new recycling and re-use concepts, fostering demonstrable effects in terms of efficiency and sustainability. RENOVATE aims at developing and demonstrating new circular economy solutions for the European battery value-chain, targeting the re-use of 100% of inspecification cell fractions (e.g. metallic foil, graphite, electrolyte, fluorinated compounds and cathode active materials) within the battery value chain, fostering a closed-loop circular approach that can reduce battery material waste going to landfill, increase the availability of battery precursors in the European battery eco-system, and demonstrate new added-value business cases for recyclers and battery materials users. All recycled materials will be recovered over all potential streams (pre-customer scraps and End-of-Life products). The ultimate goal is to support the green and digital transformation of the European battery industry to increase its competitiveness and promote its just growth path. Holistic, flexible, and closed-loop processes for the recycling of EoL batteries based on both low and high energy density chemistries will be designed and validated to allow real and easily implementable “net zero carbon” process. A specific aim will also be smart re-integration of the side streams (e.g. waste chemicals/solvents) in the recycling processes and/or in in other industrial activities to minimize the residues coming from batteries production.

Such implementations, however, keep QDs under permanent loading, such… Read more as constant illumination, elevated temperature or exposure to environmental agents. Efforts to make QDs resilient against loading-induced ageing and loss of performance are time-consuming and costly. Track The Twin addresses this problem through a research and training program aimed at creating and using QD digital twins (QDDTs). Focused on the case of QDs under illumination, this goal creates an exceptionally rich environment to form a new cohort of early-stage researchers (ESRs) in nanomaterials. Trained as experts in the latest methods of synthesis, structure analysis and time-resolved spectroscopy – from infrared to x-ray - and computational materials science, ESRs will learn to join forces to reach the common goal of demonstrating loading-resilient QDs synthesized according to best QD structures as predicted by the QDDTs. To facilitate such a collaborative endeavor, all ESRs will be trained to use and co-develop a common data platform and they will be permanently exposed to the diversity of environments needed to implement together a QDDT. Thanks to the deep collaboration between word-leading academic beneficiaries and start-up companies in nanomaterials and computational chemistry, scientific training is complemented by extensive transferrable skills training. Moreover, the timeliness of the research and training topic – digital twins in materials science - enables the consortium to implement a proactive outreach strategy, which extends from a personal outreach activities of the ESRs to QD technology broadcasting to reach a broader field of industrial actors and policy makers and ensure the network has lasting impact on nanomaterials research and innovation.

NEMESIS - NEw generation MEthods for numerical SImulationS

Relevant partial differential equations (PDEs) problems of the 21st century, including those encountered in magnetohydrodynamics and geological flows, involve severe difficulties linked to: the presence of incomplete differential operators related to Hilbert complexes; nonlinear and hybrid-dimensional physical behaviors; embedded/moving interfaces. The goal… Read more of the NEMESIS project is to lay the groundwork for a novel generation of numerical simulators tackling all of the above difficulties at once. This will require the combination of skills and knowledge resulting from the synergy of the PIs, covering distinct and extremely technical fields of mathematics: numerical analysis, analysis of nonlinear PDEs, and scientific computing. The research program is structured into four tightly interconnected clusters, whose goals are: the development of Polytopal Exterior Calculus (PEC), a general theory of discrete Hilbert complexes on polytopal meshes; the design of innovative strategies to boost efficiency, embedded into a general abstract Multilevel Solvers Convergence Framework (MSCF); the extension of the above tools to challenging nonlinear and hybriddimensional problems through Discrete Functional Analysis (DFA) tools; the demonstration through proof-of-concept applications in magnetohydrodynamics (e.g., nuclear reactor models or aluminum smelting) and geological flows (e.g., flows of gas/liquid mixtures in underground reservoirs with fractures, as occurring in CO2 storage). This project will bring key advances in numerical analysis through the introduction of entirely novel paradigms such as the PEC and DFA, and in scientific computing through MSCF. The novel mathematical tools developed in the project will break long-standing barriers in engineering and applied sciences, and will be implemented in a practitioner-oriented open-source library that will boost design and prediction capabilities in these fields.

Today, conventional inorganic SL crystals are prohibitively energy-intensive, fragile, heavy and cannot be produced in large quantities. Organic SLs are, in turn, affordable and scalable, but their low density and light yield reduce energy resolution. These shortcomings preclude progress in application areas of great importance and impose a technological bottleneck to the fundamental study of rare events. The most at risk of all is the study of neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0νDBD), a so far undetected, rare nuclear process that represents the Holy Grail in particle physics, whose observation would provide long sought-after answers on the origin of the Universe and unlock unexplored scientific territories with unimaginable progress perspectives. UNICORN will tackle this urgent grand challenge by introducing revolutionary nanotechnology-based concepts combining high energy resolution, efficiency, and stability with unmatched mass scalability. The keystone of our disruptive approach are inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) that will be specifically designed to be both the source of 0νDBD and high-performance nano-SLs. The breakthrough will also consist in achieving perfect compatibility with (in)organic hosts to obtain unparalleled ultra-high density optical-grade nanocomposite detectors with maximized light output to be coupled to custom-made light sensors that will embody the archetype of advanced radiation detectors of the future. UNICORN combines world-leading institutions and companies with complementary interdisciplinary competences ensuring the pivotal synergy to reach the project goals and rapidly translate results into economic value.
