The storage of gases such as H2 and CH4 and the capture of CO2 are closely related to the use of clean energy, environmental protection, and industrial production to ensure sustainable development of our planet. In particular, the storage of H2 and CH4 are essential for the use of clean energy while the separation and purification of CO2 is essential to reduce the greenhouse effect.
2D Van der Waals magnets are emerging materials which can be easily exfoliated down to few layer and to the monolayer limit while retaining magnetic order. Therefore, they can be incorporated into heterostructures to make new multifunctional devices with combined electric, optical and magnetic properties for applications in spintronics, quantum computing, and magneto-optical devices. Furthermore, 2D magnets represent a model system for the observation of new quantum phase transitions and phenomena at nanoscale.

The Stokes shift is an important property of luminescent materials, defined as the energy difference between the absorption band maximum and the emission spectrum maximum. Large Stokes shift fast emitters show a negligible reabsorption of their luminescence, a feature highly desirable for several applications such as fluorescence imaging, solar-light managing, and fabricating sensitive scintillating detectors for medical imaging and high-rate high-energy physics experiments.
