Titolo: From synthesis to shining applications of organic fluorophores

Abstract:  Organic luminescent materials are attracting lot of interest due to their versatility and their possible application in different fields. By modifying the molecular structure, the photophysical and electrochemical properties of organic dyes can be finely tuned and successfully addressed. In this seminar, starting from the functionalization of the 9,9’-spirobifluorene as scaffold,[1] I will present results obtained in different fields. In particular, spirobifluorene-based dyes have been used as emitters in electrochemiluminescence in solution[2,3] as well as onto surface,[4] showing high efficiency and tunable emission color. Suitable chemical substitution allowed to obtain highly soluble fluorescent dyes in aqueous solutions, which have been successfully applied in bioimaging and sensing biological targets, such as protein[5,6] and DNA.[7] By taking advantages of the presence of triphenylamine substituents, water soluble dyes have been used as hole transporting materials for organic solar cells with inverted architecture to replace successfully the PEDOT:PSS.[8] Finally, I will discuss supramolecular approaches to observe room temperature phosphorescence (RTP)[9] as well as thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)[10] phenomena with emission in the orange-red region.
